Bhandarkar’s ‘Fashion’ rated ‘Adults Only’10.15.08

Given the movie’s theme, I certainly never expected that the board would give it a ‘U’ certificate, but I was sure it would receive a U/A certificate,” Bhandarkar told us.
Bhandarkar, who has co-produced the film with UTV Motion Pictures, describes ‘Fashion’ as his most glamorous film. He roped in Priyanka Chopra, Kangna Ranaut, Arjan Bajwa and Mugdha Godse to do lead roles.
The board members, who saw the movie on Monday in Mumbai, objected to six scenes including Priyanka and Arjan’s lovemaking scenes and Priyanka and Kangana’s dragging at drugs scenes. The members asked Bhandarkar and his co-producer, Ronnie Screwvala, to delete them from the movie.
As the director refused to delete the scenes, the board has given it an ‘A’ certificate.
The members refused to be convinced by Bhandarkar’s argument that the scenes being objected to are an integral part of the movie and that yanking those off would mean compromising with the realistic depiction of the movie’s subject.
“Although we had the option of appealing to the Revising Committee of the board against the Examining Committee’s decision, we chose not to do so as that would have taken a lot of time. Besides, there was no knowing what would be the decision of the Board’s higher committee,” Bhandarkar said.
‘Fashion’, which takes a close look at the other side of the fashion world, is due for release on Oct 29.

Bollywood Snake Lady film Hisss.10.06.08

Mallika Sherawat will play a Nagin (snakewoman) in her next release, Hisss. Hisss is directed by Jennifer Lynch of Boxing Helena (1993) fame, which incidentally won her a Raspberry award for the worst director for the movie in 1994.

Does not augur well for Hisss on the face of it. But, Hisss‘ costume, make-up, and special effects teasers have generated a lot of interest. You can see from the pictures here that this is not your standard Ramsay, or even Ramu (The Factory) horror film. Costume quality and makeup in the Hiss arfe definitely on Hollywood standards. We hold our judgement though on that ridiculous name Hisss - who chose that, some assistant director to the Ramseys?

The producers, Vikram Singh and Govind Menon, have roped in Robert Kurtzman, known for his expertise in make-up, special effects, and visual effects. Kurtzman has won the Saturn award in 1999, for make-up in the movie Vampires.

Drona - Movie Review10.03.08

Via Bollywood Buzz.

DRONA is a big film in all respects — big stars, big canvas, big expenditure on SFX, big ad spend, big expectations. Sadly, it’s a big, big, big letdown as well.

Fantasy/adventure films are a rarity in Bollywood. Actually, you want to laud Goldie Behl for being courageous, for venturing into a lane that’s rarely visited by dream merchants here. But the screenplay is a complete mess. In fact, if at all there would be Razzies in Bollywood, the three writers of DRONA — Jaydeep Sarkar, Rohini Killough and Goldie Behl — should be nominated proto for coming up with a sloppy and slipshod screenplay.

What saddens your heart is the fact that the Lullas of Eros and Shrishti Arya, the producers of DRONA, have spared no efforts in giving DRONA a spectacular look. The vision is perfect, but how about narrating an absorbing and attention-grabbing story? You remember DRONA for its striking visuals, not storyline. It’s like embellishing priceless and precious jewels on a mannequin.
