Sweet salaries for Indian ‘eye candy’10.30.08

Many established Bollywood beauties have recently taking on a new role - posing in skimpy outfits for international magazines. The risque photo spreads are jacking up magazine sales and added some hefty amounts to the bank balances of various Indian divas.

So far, the list of foreign magazines seeking open-minded Indian models includes Vogue, Conde Nast, Harper’s Bazaar, Maxim, Hello, Rolling Stone, People, Housekeeping and Marie Claire.

Former Miss India winner Gul Panag recently posed in revealing black lingerie on the cover of the men’s magazine Maxim. She follows in the scantily clad footsteps of sub-continental starlets such as Neha Dhupia, Amrita Arora, Deepika Padukone, Shreya

Saran, Minissha Lamba, Mallika Sherawat, Amisha Patel, Shilpa Shetty and Soha Ali Khan.

Needless to say, Gul Panag, like the others, worked out endlessly, stuck to a strict diet and reduced herself to the coveted “size zero” to fit into the perfect bikini and hot pants.

Desi Watch - DJ Rekha10.23.08

Rekha Malhotra, better known as “DJ Rekha,” is one of the most successful South Asian musicians in America. She is also the most brazenly anti-status quo, straight-talking, no minced words kind of person you’ll ever meet. The queen of bhangra music, Rekha is a DJ with no equal in America. In her early thirties, Rekha has single-handedly carved a niche for herself and for South Asian music that has everyone throwing their hands in the air and swinging to bhangra.

Basement Bhangra is the cult party founded by Rekha that started it all. Called variously the “the must-dance destination for young South Asians,” “a Mecca for the rapidly growing number of Asian hip-hop fanatics,” and “New York’s most popular South Asian party,” Basement Bhangra has the kind of street credibility that DJs dream about. It has established one sure fact in the last six years: Rekha knows how to throw a party like no other. It is the only place where you’re likely to find Indian immigrants, American Sikhs, Connecticut gentry, and Pakistani preppy bankers, all dancing to the contagious beat of bhangra. Who would have thought that Punjabi folk music could be so popular in downtown Manhattan?

Indian fashion. Coloured perceptions?10.22.08

A few days ago, a foreign model walking in the DFW had said that she loved the Indian models.

“They’re so well groomed and we are so laid back, back home,” she had said. The same girl, after walking the ramp alongside the Indian girls on Day I of the DFW, said on condition of anonymity, “I think Indian models feel threatened by us. They’re being nasty to us and the choreographers too.”

It’s a bit of a turnaround, but the feeling was prevalent. Many Indian models had something or the other to complain about too, but they chose to be anonymous. “Why should South African models be promoted by putting our careers at stake?” asked one, accusing the South African choreographer of the DFW, Jan Malan, of favoring the South African girls and recommending them to designers while looking down on the Indian ones, preventing them from getting work.
