Music Review for Bollywood Film ‘New York’06.19.09

By: Mufsin Mahbub of Desihits.com

After being starved from Bollywood music for quite a few months owing to the stand-off between producers and multiplexes, music buffs finally have something really worth listening to. Yash Raj Films’ first release of the year called ‘New York’ stars John Abraham, Katrina Kaif, and Neil Nitin Mukesh as three friends whose lives are changed forever after the devastating 9/11 attacks.

The music of ‘New York’ is youthful and fresh. Since the film is completely based in New York, the soundtrack has a complete western feel and there are very few Indian elements in it. The soundtrack features four songs, two remixes and two instrumentals.

Via Bollywood Buzz

Bollywood fans can dance around the trees, the stand-off between producers and multiplex owners is over. With only B-grade flicks, reruns of old hits, and regional cinema on offer for the past few months, audiences are eager for fresh content at the box office.

First of the biggies is Yash Raj Films New York. Buzz for the film actually started at the end of 2008, when the trailer was released with Shah Rukh Khan vehicle Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. YRF’s latest is all set for a worldwide release on 26th June 2009.

Directed by Kabir Khan and Produced by Aditya Chopra, the film sees John Abraham and Katrina Kaif together in their first outing. After John raised temperatures in his yellow trunks in Dostana, the actor is all set to go one step further, with reports he stripped for one scene. Neil Nitin Mukesh and Irrfan Khan also star in this highly anticipated project.

New York is a contemporary story of friendship set against the larger than life backdrop of a city often described as the centre of the world. For most of us, larger events in the world are just headlines in the newspapers but these events can change our lives… forever. New York is one such story of 3 young friends whose beautiful lives are turned upside down by larger events beyond their control.

The trailer of the movie can now be viewed on the Yash Raj Films website, www.yashrajfilms.com

Kannada film industry in trouble05.28.09

kannada_films_01Via Buzz18

The long standoff between multiplex owners and Bollywood filmmakers has affected the Kannada film industry too, with two big budget Kannada films Dubai Babu and Taakat failing to reach the multiscreen cinemas here because of the row over revenue sharing.

The producers fear they will have to bear heavy losses because of the tiff.

The Kannada film industry is having a stand off with the multiplexes, particularly PVR and INOX, for not agreeing to share revenue with the producers on the basis of occupancy ratios. The producers demand that when the revenues are falling, the share should be proportionately shared between the multiplexes and the producers.

Thomas D’Souza, senior vice president of the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC), said the talks are on with the multiplexes for a settlement.

“The representatives of the multiplexes are meeting the executive committee members of the KFCC today. We hope to reach a solution in a day or two,” he said.

D’Souza also added that the KFCC would permit screening of the Kannada films in the multiplexes as soon as the issue is resolved.

“We were expecting a good revenue from PVR and INOX multiplexes, but since we were prevented from screening our films in these multiplexes we are sure to bear huge losses. I have spent nearly Rs.50 million on my film. Losing out additional revenue that comes in the initial weeks by screening the film in the multiplexes would result in huge losses to producers,” Shylendra Babu, producer of Dubai Babu, told IANS.

The multiplexes, which haven’t screened any Hindi films since the last two months because of the tiff with the Bollywood producers on the same issue, have been under severe pressure to accept the demands of the Kannada producers as the revenues have come down drastically.

Cannes 2009: Where’s The Money, Honey?05.26.09

cannes_2009Via bollywoodhungama

Cannes 2009 could not have been more predictable – the prevailing economic gloom has obviously had a ferocious impact on the key film markets that have taken place in the year gone by, and no one was expecting the Marche du Cannes to be a gold mine. Being the biggest in the world gave it a serious disadvantage – it was the most severely hit, notwithstanding the swine flu scare.

For the thousand-odd critics, celebrity hounds, the enormous paparazzi and the locals, the festival offered a brilliant concentration of star quality. The competition line up was the most astounding in all the years that I have been visiting the sea-side town – 20 films from directors, who, between them, have competed for the Palme d’Or on 48 previous occasions. But for the majority of producers and distributors focused on doing serious business at the Marche, the massive oomph quotient means little.

The sexy pics that got Neetu into trouble05.22.09

neetu_01Via Bollywood Buzz

Recently, Neetu Chandra and model Krishika Gupta were shooting for the cover of men’s magazine The Man at a Juhu Hotel. The crowd at the hotel objected and shut down the shoot. But the pictures are out and the magazine is all set to hit stands later this week.

The regular male customers of the hotel started raising objections, saying that the shoot promoted lesbianism and shouting, ‘Jai Maharashtra’. They got aggressive and began physically harming the crew of the magazine. They threatened the crew by alleging they had connections with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena. That is when the shooting was wrapped up for the sake of the safety of the crew and the models.

Neetu says, “Though the concept about two girls getting very intimate was a bit outrageous, we were doing it very aesthetically. But these men were a frustrated lot and couldn’t take the heat. They only saw nudity in our concept.”

The actress explains, “First they tried to seek my attention with smiles and stares, so I acknowledged them. But as I went on with my work, the whole group of men suddenly started feeling ignored and began creating a scene. They did manage to scare me when they started to politicise the issue and screamed communal slogans. That was when we had to stop the shoot.”

The Man, however, has decided to go ahead and release the pictures they took before the ruckus began. The hot and steamy pictures are sure to create a controversy when the magazine hits stands later this week.

Indian films get positive response in Cannes05.21.09

road_movieVia Bollywood Buzz

With “Slumdog Millionaire” having made waves on the global scene, Indian movie themes and filmmakers are beginning to reap the benefits in the international sales and co-productions arena at the ongoing Cannes Film Market.

“‘Slumdog’ has opened a door for Indian cinema,” says Hollywood producer Ashok Amritraj. “We have to put our foot in and capitalise on the opportunity.”

The happy augury is that several Indian films have been picked up for global distribution by frontline sales agents and the going could only get better from here on if filmmakers from this part of the world, as Amritraj points out, can learn the rules of the game.
